“The Teaching of Buddha” is a collection of Shakyamuni Buddha’s teachings. It has been compiled and translated to make it easy for everyone to understand and receive Buddha’s teachings.
Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism was enlightened and attained Buddhahood at the age of 35. Before entering into Nirvana at the age of 80, he benevolently shared his realization for 45 years through various teachings that could be understood by anyone. After his death, his disciples assembled and examined the compilation of His teachings known as “sutra” and pass them down to the succeeding generations.
These teachings first spread in the Pali language as Theravada Buddhism spread to Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar and Southeast Asian. Meanwhile, the teaching based on Sanskrit translations spread as Mahayana Buddhism into the western regions of China, Tibet, Korea and Japan. The sutras from India transmitted to China and arrived in Japan through Chinese (kanji) translations.
“The Teaching of Buddha” contains not only the significant essence of more than 5,000 sutras transmitted to Japan, but also includes selections from the Pali sutras transmitted to southern Asia.
